Winter Lake Campus Information
The Winter Lake Research Center campus is located near the Oregon Coast in the small town of Coquille, Oregon. Coquille has a population of approximately 5000 people. It is the county seat of Coos County, Oregon. The town is situated in the Coquille River Valley roughly 20 miles from the ocean beaches. It is situated between the coastal plain and the coast range of mountains. The weather is mild, dry and cool in the summer and wet and cool in the winter. Although temperature extremes are possible, they are seldom encountered here. There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities in the surrounding area.
The campus itself is located
on a quiet back street on the edge of town. The facility is
a three story building that has recently been mostly rebuilt after a fire
that occurred over 30 years ago. The building area is 1200
square feet per story. The top level is actually at street level, so
the one quarter acre property is surrounded on three sides by steep banks, giving
a measure of privacy and a feeling of being in the country.
Here is a picture of a portion of the research gardens.
The top level is where the center business facilities are. It has a dual level arrangement with a study area in a loft. Energy sources are non-traditional and sustainable energy sources wherever possible. One goal is to convert to 100% renewable energy.
The bottom level has off-street outdoor parking and a workshop for larger projects. There is a garden area with 8 raised beds and 3 greenhouses. There is space for a small future orchard. Future projects will be the installation of fruit trees and berry bushes.
